In memoriam: John Friedmann, urban planning pioneer and honourary UBC professor, dies at 91


The UBC Faculty of Applied Science mourns the passing of John Friedmann, 91, an honourary professor in UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP).

Also a professor emeritus in the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he served as head of the Urban Planning Program in the university’s Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning for many years, Friedmann played a pivotal role in planning scholarship and education for over four decades.

When the rubber hits the road: recycled tires create stronger concrete

UBC engineers have developed a more resilient type of concrete using recycled tires that could be used for concrete structures like buildings, roads, dams and bridges while reducing landfill waste.

Biomedical Engineering Student Team annual showcase

On Monday, May 29, 2017 the UBC Biomedical Engineering Student Team (BEST) hosted its annual showcase to feature a number of the innovative solutions that its members have been developing. Medical professionals, UBC faculty, biomedical industry professionals and students were in attendance.

UBC Faculty of Applied Science welcomes interim dean


Effective June 5, 2017, James Olson, PEng, is the interim dean of the Faculty of Applied Science.

He follows Marc Parlange, who joined the Faculty as dean in 2013 and is now provost of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
